Day Out // ... Mountfitchet Castle ...

During our half term, Noah went off on holiday with his cousin Sam glamping in Lincoln so we were down one kid.
I was pretty much working every day but on the two days off I had we decided we do something a little bit different and go a tad further afield.

So on Tuesday my first day off, we jumped in the car and headed to Essex.
Two hours later we were at Mountfitchet Castle.

Mountfitchet Castle is a unique time capsule.

With its commanding position overlooking the Stort Valley, the Castle is situated on its original site which is steeped in history.
Formerly an Iron Age hill fort, this historic site was also a Roman signals fort and later a Saxon and Viking settlement before being attacked in 1066 by William the Conqueror who built a wooden Motte and Bailey castle here.
Mountfitchet Castle was also briefly used by the Royalist Army to King Charles in the English Civil War (17th C).
The Royalist forces held out at the castle when they were laid Siege to by Cromwell.
The grounds were cleared to reveal the original earthworks and mounds and after years of battling with planners, in 1980 the work began to reconstruct Mountfitchet Castle. After many years of work, the restoration of Mountfitchet Castle was completed and was opened to the public in 1985 and is unique as being the only wooden Motte and Bailey reconstruction on its original site anywhere in the world.
This historic castle enables the visitor to travel back in time to 1066 Norman England. Explore the Castle and roam through the Norman Village hidden behind the castle walls, wander in and out of the many houses and view the scenes, smell the log fires burning and experience the ambience of an ancient bygone lifestyle. A living history, hands-on and interactive experience.

We started off in the Toy Museum and Haunted house, we all really loved seeing all the toys, the boys all loved the Star Wars and Doctor Who collections.

The boys, however, weren't so keen on the Haunted House, Alex even cried halfway through!
So we quickly turned on our phone lights and zoomed them through to the otherside.
Once through they all cheered up.
*

When we arrived there was a school trip going on, so the grounds were full of children, but it didn't phase the boys and they got on with what they wanted to do.
The school kids were all very polite.

After lunch, the school kids all went back to school and the grounds became very empty, the boys pretty much had free range.

We went back around so the boys could do some bits that they had missed, like go inside the jail and play with the mills.

Also, once the school kids had gone the Deer came out to play!
They were super friendly and even fed straight from our hands.
That was probably my favourite part of the day.

Mountfitchet Castle is definitely worth a visit with the kids.

The staff were all really helpful and friendly.
We had a fab time and will probably go back again with Noah.

Don’t Break The Bank Holiday

Living in a holiday destination Bank Holidays can get really busy around here, so we normally decided to stay in or visit family.
None of the boys really enjoy the hustle and bustle of town and prefer to be kept busy other ways.
When possible we also try our best to keep the cost down.

So I thought I would share some of our top favourite things to do on a Bank Holiday.

Garden Picnic..

If the weather is nice, why not head out into the garden and have a picnic?
Food always tastes better in the sun...
The boys love eating outside and it always makes them smile to see food being set up on the picnic bench.

Get The Kids To Put On A Show...

The twins love putting on a show, they never really make sense and they are usually over within a second, but they spend most of the day practising.
When they're really planning their play, they always ask for face paints.
I'm not amazing at face paints but they are always happy when they see the end results.

Movie Day....

If the weather is being rubbish, why not snuggle up on the sofa and watch some of your favourite films?
When we have a film day, the boys each pick a film and then sit back and enjoy a movie marathon.
Cakes and popcorn are usually provided by yours truly.

Painting Fun...

Sometimes sitting in front of the telly can get a bit boring, so when that happens I always have a supply of paint and paper.
Getting the boys to paint always keeps them entertained for a couple of hours and then they end up with a few new master pieces to put up on the fridge.

Bake a Cake...

Before you have a movie day, you could bake your own cakes.
We all enjoy baking cakes and making a mess in the kitchen.
You can either look in the cupboards and get creative with the ingredients that you have, or you could cheat and get a pre made kit with your weekly shopping.

You can find more tips on what to do over the Bank Holiday here.

We were asked to work with Provident on their ‘don’t break the bank holiday’ campaign to advise families across the UK on what do but on a budget.”

My Good Egg

This Easter I've teamed up with The Co Op to celebrate the in our lives.

My Good Egg is Jon.

Why?

Because every day he wakes up in immense pain, pain so bad that I can't even imagine how bad, but yet he puts on a brave face for me and the boys and goes about being the best daddy and partner he can be.

He's broken his back twice, has had countless operations, has had disks removed and screws fixed in, screws taken out and now is on the waiting list to have a pain stimulator fixed into his spine.
With the hope that actually takes the focus away.
He could have big surgery again, but the risks out weigh the positives.

Because of his back pain he also suffers really bad anxieties, which make leaving the house a daily battle.
When I suggest doing something out of the blue it will normally end up in a massive argument.
I am learning to be more understanding and try and plan things which I want to do a few days ahead of when I want too.

It's a learning curve for both of us, he's learning to say yes more and I'm learning to be more accepting.

I'm not the most patient person, so for him putting up with me he really is my Good Egg!!!

Potty Training Academy // Sticker Chart.

Ru has taken to potty training like a pro!
He's had hardly any accidents and is no longer using nappies during the day.

I started him off in Bambino Mio training pants but after a day of a couple accidents he started taking himself to the toilet without any prompt from me.

I introduced him to his Potty Training Academy sticker chart on day one and he was very keen to fill it up, so even when he didn't need the loo, he would try and squeeze something out just to get a sticker.

We used both a toddler loo seat and the carry me potty, but he prefers to do his wee's just like his brothers...standing up.
He sings putting out the fiiiire when he's weeing (god knows where he got that from! lol.)

The first real test was sending him to nursery and seeing if he returned with a bag full of wet pants.
I made sure the washing machine was free for his return but when he came home wearing the same outfit that he went in in was such a win.

The sticker chart was a great help with getting him to go to the toilet, as he knew if he did his business in the toilet he would be rewarded with a sticker or two but if he did it in his pants, he would get no sticker.

He cottoned on to that very quickly and his chart filled up instantly!
We still aren't there 100% with number twos...he'd much rather do them on the floor or in his pants, so I'm thinking the special reward box will help with that.
